Why Preserve
When you support farmland preservation, you are not only helping farmers preserve the land that grows our food, but also protecting the character of the community and a very special way of life for our children and grandchildren. Agriculture in Lancaster County is more than just a business; it is part of a living history and cultural heritage. When a landowner preserves his farm, a legal document called a conservation easement is created which prevents residential, industrial, and commercial development of the land.
Farmers can donate their conservation easement or receive a cash payment per acre. All preserved farms may be eligible for a federal income tax deduction.
